Data content
The indicator gives a projection of the percentage of the age group in the total population on the last day of 2020. The initial populations for the projection consist of populations at the end of 2008 broken down by one-year age groups and sex. Statistics Finland uses a population projection method called demographic component model by which future trends in population size and structure are projected using birth rate, mortality and migration coefficients specific to each age group. The coefficients are based on demographic trends in recent years.

The projection was prepared in September 2009. Statistics Finland prepares municipality specific population projections at three year intervals. The coefficients are based on demographic trends in recent years.
No attempts have been made to estimate the influence of economic policy, social policy or regional policy issues on demographic trends.
