Data content

The indicator gives the number of care days for all those aged 75 and over who have received care in a psychiatric institution per 1000 persons of the same age during the year. Population figures refer to mean population. The indicator covers all psychiatric inpatients wards in the public sector (municipalities, joint municipal boards and the state). No psychiatric inpatient care is provided in the private sector. Care days during the year refers to all care days falling within the calendar year. The number of care days is calculated as the difference between the date of discharge (or 31 Dec) and the date of admission (or 1 Jan), that is, excluding the day of discharge. If the date of discharge and the date of admission are identical, the number of care days will be one.

Interpretation

The number of care days for those aged 75 and over who have received psychiatric inpatient care during the year describes the level and severity of mental disorders in the age group. The number of care days also depends on constantly changing treatment practices. Lengths of hospital stays have decreased, with a decrease in the number of care days even if morbidity as such has not always changed. However, it should be noted that the level of hospital care also depends on the resources available (e.g. the extent to which psychiatric hospital care/outpatient care is available in the area) and the treatment practices in use.
