The indicator gives the number of periods of care during the year for those aged 65 and over in psychiatric hospital care per 1000 persons of same age. Population figures refer to mean population. The indicator covers psychiatric inpatient wards in the public sector (municipalities, joint municipal boards and the state). No psychiatric inpatient care is provided in the private sector.
The indicator describes psychiatric morbidity to some extent, but especially the regional and nationwide use of psychiatric hospital services. In addition to morbidity, the factors influencing service use include population age structure, service supply, treatment practices (particularly the provision of care at different levels of the health-care system) and the threshold for seeking care.
