Data content

The indicator gives the number of those aged 75 and over who have received psychiatric hospital care during the year per 1000 persons of same age. Population figures refer to mean population. The indicator covers all psychiatric inpatient wards in the public sector (municipalities, joint municipal boards and the state). No psychiatric inpatient care is provided in the private sector.

Interpretation

The indicator describes psychiatric morbidity to some extent but especially the regional and nationwide use of psychiatric hospital services. In addition to morbidity, the factors influencing service use include population age structure, service supply, treatment practices (particularly the provision of care at different levels of the health-care system) and the threshold for seeking care.

Restrictions

Individual level data in the Care Register for Social Welfare and Health Care are confidential. For the sake of privacy protection, no municipality level data with less than five cases are published.
